Certified Medication Aide Program

A focused program pathway for eligible New Jersey direct-care professionals preparing for medication aide certification and safe medication administration responsibilities.

What is a Certified Medication Aide?

In New Jersey, Certified Medication Aides provide medication-related services in assisted living facilities, comprehensive personal care homes, dementia care homes, and assisted living programs. The CMA credential is separate from the Certified Medical Assistant credential.

New Jersey eligibility

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, a medication aide certification candidate must already be currently certified in New Jersey as a nurse aide, homemaker-home health aide, or personal care assistant. Candidates must also successfully complete a medication aide training program approved by the NJ Department of Health before registering for the exam.

  • Active NJ CNA, CHHA, or PCA credential
  • Completion of an NJDOH-approved medication aide training program
  • Exam registration after training completion
  • Passing the certification examination
  • Criminal Background Investigation (CBI)
Important: New Jersey does not reciprocate with another state’s medication aide program. State rules also require retraining if the candidate does not pass the exam within six months after completing training.

Program learning focus

Valor’s instructional focus is designed around the core responsibilities associated with safe medication assistance and administration in assisted living settings. Specific curriculum, contact hours, clinical med-pass requirements, and approved class schedules must match the requirements authorized for the school’s NJDOH training program.

Medication Knowledge

Terminology, common drug classes, dosage forms, routes, timing, storage, side effects, contraindications, interactions, and when to seek nursing guidance.

Administration & Documentation

Resident identification, medication orders, the medication administration record (MAR), observation, reporting, error prevention, and documentation expectations.

Professional Role

Scope of responsibility, delegation, communication with the registered professional nurse, resident rights, privacy, and professional conduct.

Clinical Readiness

Preparation for required clinical medication-pass experiences at an appropriately licensed New Jersey clinical site, consistent with approved program requirements.

State certification timing

NJDOH currently instructs candidates to register for the examination within three months of completing the training program. Candidates who do not pass the exam within six months of training completion must retrain.
